Name: | Captain Jack Harkness |
---|---|
Birthdate: | Apr 16 |
Location: | Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom |

Character |
Birth: 51st century, Boeshane Peninsula Occupation: Various. Time Agent; con man; now leader of Torchwood Three in Cardiff. Current location in time and space: 21st century, Cardiff, Wales History: Originally a Time Agent, taught at the Time Agency and able to travel through time with the help of a vortex manipulator strapped to his wrist. After he realized that the Time Agency stole two years of his life (he has no memory of what happened during those two years), he went rogue and became a con man instead. One of his cons took him to 1941 London, where he assumed the identity of recently-deceased American RAF volunteer Captain Jack Harkness. While conducting this con he met the ninth incarnation of the Doctor and his companion Rose Tyler. After learning of the effects his con had on the Blitz-era inhabitants of London, he traps a German bomb and prevents it from detonating, but he had to sacrifice his ship to do so. Rescued from his ship right before the bomb destroys it by the Doctor and Rose, he joins them as they travel through the universe. His association with them ends when he's killed by Daleks, and Rose, with all the power of the time vortex running through her, brings him back to life in the process of destroying the Daleks. Stuck in the future but wanting to know what happened, he travels through time and slowly realizes that he cannot die, before getting stuck in 1869 when his vortex manipulator breaks. Forced to live through the 20th century until he can find a timeline that overlaps with the Doctor's, he is hunted down by Torchwood. At first he is their prisoner but then is recruited to the organization as a freelance agent, eventually being appointed the leader of Torchwood Three. He is reunited with the Doctor and travels with him and his new companion, Martha Jones, to the end of the universe. This leads to a year spent enslaved by rogue Time Lord the Master, though time reverses and that year is wiped from the Earth's history -- only he and a few others remember it. After that year, he returns to Torchwood with no explanation for his mysterious disappearance. A year later, an old friend from the Time Agency with whom he had a falling out returned and caused havoc in the city of Cardiff. It turned out that he was following the orders of Gray, Jack's younger brother, who had been captured by aliens and tortured. Gray blames Jack for this and wanted to punish him. This resulted in Jack being buried alive under the city of Cardiff for 2000 years, constantly suffocating and reviving, dug up in 1901 by members of Torchwood, who then place him in cryogenic stasis with an alarm set to wake him up on the same day that he was taken to the past to be buried. Jack was eventually forced to place his brother in cryogenic stasis with their issues unresolved, and now he and his team must put Cardiff back in order. At this point, all his team knows about him is that Captain Jack Harkness is not his real name, and he cannot die. He may or may not be the Face of Boe. He appears to have some sort of evolved "51st century pheromones" which make him more sexually attractive to just about everyone (except perhaps "the right kind of Doctor"). He is best described as omnisexual -- he doesn't discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, or even species. He wears period military clothes from World War II, including suspenders and an officer's wool greatcoat. |
Canon |
Jack first appeared in the Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child." He stayed with the series for the rest of the season, with his last appearance in that season being "Parting of the Ways." He is a main character in the spin-off Torchwood, appearing in all 26 episodes over two seasons. Jack also appeared in Doctor Who episodes "Utopia," "The Sound of Drums," "Last of the Time Lords," "The Stolen Earth," and "Journey's End." He is current through all of his canon appearances, both in Torchwood and Doctor Who. |
